The Brazilian backbone of Shakhtar Donetsk

The Shakhtar Story : On the Verge of the Uefa Cup (Europa League) Semi Finals?
Why do Brazilians migrate to Eastern Europe? Easy answer, as the leagues there can offer them more money and they can offer its parent club more money then the Western European clubs can. Many owners of the top teams own huge reserves of coal, gas, steel and oil. The likes of Vagner Love and Daniel Carvahalo play for Russian side CSKA Moscow. Raphael Alex plays for Spartak Moscow and former Cruzeiro player Milohem Guilherme has just signed a deal with Dynamo Kiev of Ukraine. Many of the teams have more Brazilians in their first team then their own native country. The teams are turning foreign like teams in the west such as, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool. This can only be a good thing. As the more competition the big teams have; the harder European competitions like he Champion's League and the Uefa Cup become. Furthermore, the Western European teams will struggle to get talent around the world due to the amount of money at the Eastern European team's disposal. This means the West may not be able to get the world's best players. And with the Eastern European teams having the best players they can start winning big competition in Europe like the Uefa Cup. At the moment most young talent do want to move to big clubs in the west due to their history and the reputation they have. Rich clubs in Eastern Europe are usually snubbed or considered as stepping stones. Move there, play some good football and impress them and then leave for a bigger club. Kakha Kalazade may not be Brazilian but, he a Georgian did that by playing for Dynamo Kiev for a couple of seasons. Then, he moved to AC Milan. A big European club.
Shakhtar Donetsk are the current Ukrainian Premier League champions. However, this year they are struggling domestically. The champions are 15 points behind leaders Dynamo Kiev and sit in second place. Also, they have Metalist Karkiv one point behind them. All of these teams have played the same amount of games. Shakhtar Donetsk know that it will be a miracle if they can get first at this late part of the season. So, their goal is to keep Metalist at bay and get the second Champion's League Qualifying Spot as third go into the Uefa Cup (next year it shall be called the Europa League).
Shakhtar Donetsk's progress in Europe has been more comfortable. They like to keep the ball and pass it around and due to their many Brazilians tricks and skills are necessary in their play. They easily qualified using this style of football in the Champion's League Qualifying round against Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb. It only took them three minutes to penetrate the outside of their box winning a free kick when the defence hauled down Shaktar's Croatian Dario Srna. He took the free kick and scored. Then, in the second half Brandao, another Brazilian was released down the left for a powerful run and he crossed it in. The ball was half cleared and Jadson, another Brazilian smacked it in the back of net. Another of Shakhtar's Brazilians, midfielder Willian, then sent a shot just past the post as the Ukrainian champions aimed to put the tie beyond their visitors. They were then put in a tough European group with Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon and FC Basel. They comfortably beat Basel with an amazing 25 yard free kick off their best and most talented Brazilian Fernandinho and a goal off Jadson once more. Unfortunately 3 consecutive defeats followed. Even though Brazilian right back/right midfielder Ilishinso put them ahead of Barcelona on 45 minutes two late goals of arguably the best player in the world, Lionel Messi settled the game and made Barcelona victorious. They had their chances when Brandao crossed it in and Luiz Adriano set up Ilihinso who missed from close range. Then, 2 more defeats followed at the hands of Sporting Lisbon. It was pretty much over their Champion's League experience but with a few comfortable wins and a history breaking win against Barcelona at Camp Nou secured them 3rd spot in the group over FC Basel and they would enter the Uefa Cup as a consolation prize. Even though Barcelona played many youth players the victory is still huge as it shows how the teams in Eastern Europe are progressing.
The 3-2 win over Barcelona at Camp Nou.
The Uefa Cup they got automatically put into the Top 32 and eased [past a Tottenham Hotspur B Team. Resting their first team players for the English Premier League Relegation battle. This was obviously good for Shakhtar as it was an easy victory. A strike off Fernandinho in the last four minutes of the second leg in England sealed their victory. Then they overcame the 2005 winners, CKSA Moscow after going down 1-0 in the first leg. Courtesy of a Vagner Love penalty five minutes into the second half. But, a decisive 2- 0 win in the second leg sealed it for them. Fernandinho scored a penalty and then a mix up in the CKSA defense and CSKA's goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev drooping the ball after, failing to catch it. Gave Luiz Adriano the perfect chance to seal the game off. And he did.
Luiz Adraino's clinical goal.
Unfortunately, Brandao their main striker left for Marseille. Ironically, they got paired to play Marseille in the Quarter Finals. Brandao was cup tied so, he couldn't play. With the loss of Brandao their attack force would be weakened and it would be only Luiz Adriano up front. But with keeping the ball and having a majority of the possession they were up 1 -0 at half time due to a cross that was failed to be cleared by the Marseille defense and Steve Madanda failed to save the ball and pushed it into the path of Hübschman who finished a simple tap in from close range. For the second time, Shakhtar scored on the break. Willian, only introduced for Ilsinho two minutes earlier, cut in from the right and found Adriano, who played a one-two with Fernandinho before finding Jadson in space to tap in after 65 minutes. Absolutely, tight passing and Brazilian like.
Highlights of Shakhtar's 2 - 0 win over Marseille.
On Thursday they have the return leg where they play Marseille at the Velodrome, Marseille. They have the clear advantage with a 2-0 lead and can score sway goals too. It is this Thursday. www.itv.com shall show the game online. Or www.justin.tv.
But, the Brazilians I think which, will break into Western Europe is :
Fernandinho.
Fernandinho played for Atletico Paranaense and moved to Shakhtar after 3 years there in 2005. In 72 appearances there he scored 14 goals. In 77 appearances he has scored 12 goals for Shakhtar and is arguably the best player in Ukraine at the moment. He has won the player of the season last season and is always a threat going forward. He is an attacking midfielder but, can also play wing. He prefers the left side of midfield to the right side of midfield though. In The Champion's League he made 6 appearances scoring 2 goals. And in the Uefa Cup he has scored 2 goals in 5 appearances. He is considered as their playmaker and is their vice captain if Srna is not fit too play or carrying on playing. Also, he takes their penalties.
Jadson.
Many people may argue that Jadson is better then Fernandinho. At 25 clubs may will have to snap him up now in Western Europe before he stops playing at his peak. In five appearances in the Champion's League he scored 4 goals. And in appearances in the Uefa Cup he has scored 2 goals. He is truly a goal scoring machine for them . He plays in midfield but, likes to get foward and scores goal. He is an attacking minded midfielder. Also, like Fernandinho he played for Atletico Paranaense and moved to Shakhar after 3 years there in 2005. In 65 appearances for them he scored 21 goals and for 75 appearances for Shakhtar he has scored 20 goals. He enjoys to take long range shots like Fernandinho and uses tricks and skills to get past defenders. He was pretty much non-existent in the game against Marseille but, played much better when he scored.
Jadson celebrating a goal with Luiz Adriano.
Brandao
Okay. Brandao has moved to Western Europe but, I just couldn't leave him out. Brandao was snapped up by Marseille January this year. He played for around 5 Brazillian clubs before moving to Shakhtar. He spent 6 to 7 years with Shakhtar netting 60 goals in 129 appearances. His Marseille career is looking good with 5 goals in 11 appearances. Unfortunately, he did not net a goal in his 5 appearances in the Champion's League this season for Shakhtar but, did many assists that led to goals. He is a strong bulky centre forward. And with Dunga needing to replace Adriano. Will Brandao take his place ? He has competition from the younger Hulk and Kerrison. Will Dunga pick him? Only time will tell.
Yes there are others in the form of Luiz Adriano, who I feel needs more experience. And Ilihinso. But, these three have stuck out in Shakhtar's squad. And now if they hold onto their advantage against Marseille they will go into the Uefa Cup Semi Finals for the first time in their history. Dynamo Kiev their rivals can do this. But, have a harder challenge. Their didn't get any goals in Paris against Paris Saint Germain, PSG and now are playing at home. Were PSG can get away goals. So on Thurday the world will see if Ukraine can make football history.
So, I am rooting for a Shakhtar victory !
